Situated about 3,800 meters above sea level, Lake Titicaca is a beautiful, sacred lake that lies on the border between Peru and Bolivia. It has 36 islands, the most important of which are the Sun and the Moon, the cradle of the Incan empire, and the temple of the "Virgins of the Sun" respectively.
In Copacabana, a town located near Lake Titicaca, you will find the important Sanctuary of the Virgen Morena and the Astronomical Observatory. The Intikala, or Tribunal del Inca, is 200 meters outside the city and the Inca Bath, or Kusijata, two kilometers from the city.
Located on the southern shore of Lake Titicaca, the city of Tiwanaku (also spelled Tiahuanaco) was the capital of a powerful pre-Inca civilization that dominated the Andean region between 500 and 900 AD. The ruins of this ancient culture include temples, a pyramid, symbolic gates, monoliths and mysterious carvings of alien-like faces.
With habitats ranging from montane forest and cloud forest to lowland forest, this region features green slopes, cliffs, rivers, waterfalls and moderate vegetation and the towns of Chulumani and Coroico.
Salar de Uyuni
